Ciao Vassilis, parlaci di te e di come hai approcciato la fotografia.
Salve! Sono Vassilis e vivo in Grecia, dove lavoro come avvocato. Sono cresciuto ad Atene, trascorrendo le estati della mia infanzia, tra Kalamata e Naxos. La fotografia ha sempre avuto un posto speciale nella mia vita, perchè dacchè ricordo ho sempre scattato fotografie. È stato però solo nel 2016 che ho iniziato a fotografare in modo più consapevole, partecipando a seminari di fotografia creativa e storia dell’arte. Posso dire che la fotografia è il mio porto sicuro e il mio passaporto per situazioni e persone che altrimenti non avrei mai conosciuto e incontrato.
Come nasce “LA VOCE DELLA CICADA”?
“Voice of the Cicada” è il mio primo progetto completo. Ho iniziato a pensarci nel novembre 2020, durante il lockdown in Grecia. Sebbene il progetto non sia direttamente collegato al lockdown, le esperienze che ho vissuto durante questo periodo mi hanno fatto capire che ho sempre ritratto scene banali e quotidiane intorno al mio quartiere, nella periferia sud di Atene. Man mano che le passeggiate nel quartiere diventavano più frequenti, il progetto si sviluppava nella mia mente e ho iniziato a modificare le fotografie che avevo fatto in passato, oltre a scattarne di nuove. La “Voce della cicala” pone domande sul ruolo della mia comfort zone domestica e se protezione e restrizione siano effettivamente due facce della stessa medaglia. Documentando gli elementi paradossali che circondano la mia vita quotidiana, cerco di dare un senso a me stesso e di affrontare le mie domande esistenziali. Il progetto nasce quindi come bisogno intimo di affrontare questi temi. Anche se ora è completo, posso sentire che “Voice of the Cicada” sarà un progetto perennemente in corso, poiché la mia esplorazione del mondano è continua e aggiunge sempre nuove fotografie a questa serie.
Da chi prendi ispirazione per i tuoi lavori?
Mi ispiro alla vita di tutti i giorni, a ciò che ho intorno. Mi piace osservare l’ordinario e chiedermi “perché” e “come” su tutto. Ogni piccolo dettaglio intorno a noi include idee più grandi o più piccole, scelte e catene di eventi che lo hanno reso quello che è ora. Ovviamente trovo ispirazione in altre opere d’arte, siano esse dipinti, musica, libri, cinema, video arte, tutto. Nella sfera della fotografia, alcuni fotografi il cui lavoro è stato molto stimolante e di grande impatto per me sono Luigi Ghirri, Alec Soth, Stephen Shore, Robert Frank, Philip Lorca DiCorcia e Max Pinckers.
Come hai trovato le tue storie? Qual è la prima cosa che fai prima di iniziare un progetto?
Non esiste una procedura stabilita, tutto quello che posso dire è che tutto parte sempre da un’esigenza interiore, non faccio progetti solo per il gusto di realizzarli. Quindi non mi spingo a trovare una storia, piuttosto direi che aspetto che la storia stessa mi trovi. E non esiste un punto preciso di partenza per un progetto, ad esempio “Voice of the Cicada” è nato un paio d’anni prima che io iniziassi consapevolmente a scattare foto per questo progetto. Direi che la prima cosa in un progetto sia la realizzare di cosa si tratti e quale sia il suo significato per me insieme alla raccolta di un nucleo di fotografie che si adattino a quel determinato contesto. Quando ho un nucleo, che mi mostra la strada, continuo a scattare e creare in questa direzione e mi lascio guidare dalla fotografia. Anche il titolo è molto importante, dà identità al progetto, è un grande passo avanti quando il progetto ottiene il suo titolo.
Hello Vassilis, talk about you and how did you start photography.
Hello! I’m Vassilis and I live in Greece where I work as a lawyer. I was raised in Athens, spending the summers of my childhood in Kalamata and Naxos. Photography always had a precious place in my life, as I have been taking photographs since I remember myself. It was however only in 2016 that I started to photograph more consciously, taking seminars in creative photography and art history. I can say that photography is my safe haven and my passport to situations and people I would have never otherwise experienced and met, respectively.
How “THE VOICE OF THE CICADA” is born ?
The “Voice of the Cicada” is my first complete project. I started thinking about it in November 2020, which is during the strict lockdown period in Greece. Although the project is not directly connected with the lockdown, the conditions I experienced during this period made me realize that I have been always shooting mundane, quotidian scenes around my neighbourhood, in the southern suburbs of Athens. As the walks in the neighbourhood became more frequent, the project was quickly developing in my mind and I began editing photographs which I had taken in the past, as well as making new ones, in this context. The “Voice of the Cicada” poses questions about the role of my own domestic comfort zone and whether protection and restriction are actually the two sides of the same coin. By documenting the paradoxical elements that surround my everyday life, I try to make sense of myself and address my own existential questions. The project was therefore born as my inner need to address these issues. Although it is complete now, I can feel that the Voice of the Cicada is going to be a perpetually ongoing project, as my exploration of the mundane is continuous and always brings new photographs to this series.
Who inspires you in your works?
I get inspired by the everyday life around me. I like to observe the ordinary and ask myself why and how. Every little detail around us includes bigger or smaller ideas, choices and a chain of events that made it into what it is now. Of course I do find inspiration in other art, be it paintings, music, books, cinema, video art, you name it. Within the medium of photography, some photographers whose work has been very inspirational and impactful to me are Luigi Ghirri, Alec Soth, Stephen Shore, Robert Frank, Philip Lorca DiCorcia and Max Pinckers.
How did you find your stories ? What is the first thing that you make (do?) before you start a project ?
There is no standard procedure for this, all I can say is that it starts always from an inner need as I don’t make projects just for the sake of making them. So I don’t push myself to find a story, I would say that I wait for the story to find me. And also, there is no specific starting point of a project, for example, the Voice of the Cicada had started developing a couple of years before I consciously began taking photos for it. I would say that the first thing in a project is the realization of what it is about and what it means to me and the gathering of a core of photographs which fit in that certain context. When I have a core, which shows me the way, I continue shooting and creating in this direction and let photography guide me. The title is also very important, it gives identity to the project, it is a big step forward when the project gets its title.
