Hello Calliopi, tell us something about you and how did you start with your art?
I’m based In Athens, where I studied Sculpture at the Athens School of Fine Arts. During my studies, I also had the opportunity to get involved with drawing, engraving, painting and, especially, photography and video, the latter being the main body of my work. Currently, I work with photography, but I use all media I have at my disposal, to tell my stories.
How your project “Animae” is born?
“Animae” constitues a piece of a long-term study of animals and comes as a sequence to my short film “Humans”. It came up when I turned my camera to animals I met outdoors in my daily walks. I liked the idea of approaching them, exploring their shape, almost being able to capture their breathing. In order to get so close to the animal, a state of stillness was needed, and in this state a vital experience was born. The images that compose this series are the ones that, in my sense, visualize this experience.
Which are your inspirations?
I am inspired by unexpected encounters with people, things and ideas. Any new experience is enough to trigger my creativity
How did you find your stories? What is the first thing you do before developing a project?
When I work on a project, the story is not my primary concern. The story emerges organically through the research, and – as I mainly work on long-term projects – it often changes form and context along the way. What I am trying to do at each stage of the process is to be emotionally detached and disengage myself from intentions and practices that may have worked in the past – this gives me the freedom to discover new answers and their possible questions.
Ciao Calliopi. Parlaci un po’ di te e di cosa ti ha portato alla fotografia
Vivo ad Atene, dove ho studiato scultura all’Accedemia di Belle Arti. Durante i miei studi ho avuto l’opportunità di fare esperieza con i media visivi, tra cui la stampa, il disegno, la pittura e soprattutto foto e video che sono la parte centrale del mio lavoro. Ultimamente lavoro più con la fotografia, ma uso tutti i mezzi che ho a disposizione per raccontare le mie storie.
Come nasce il progetto “Animae”?
“Animae” fa parte di una lunga ricerca sugli animali e si pone come sequenza del mio cortometraggio “Humans”. È stato ripreso quando ho puntato la mia macchina fotografica verso gli animali incontrati allì’aperto, nelle mie passeggiate quotidiane. Avrei potuto avvicinarmi a loro al punto da esplorarne la forma, avvertirne il respiro. Poiché mi trovavo così vicino, era necessario uno stato di quiete, e da questo stato nacque un’esperienza vitale. Le immagini che compongono questa serie sono quelle che, nel mio senso, rendono per immagini questa esperienza.
Quali sono le tue fonti di’ispirazione?
Sono ispirato da incontri inattesi con persone, cose, idee. Ogni nuova esperienza è suffieciente per innescare la mia creatività
Come trovi le tue storie? Qual è la prima cosa che fai quando sviluppi un progetto?
Quando lavoro a un progetto, ciò che mi interessa all’inizio non è la storia. Questa emerge organicamente attraverso la ricerca e, poiché lavoro principalmente su progetti a lungo termine, cambia spesso forma e contesto durante il percorso. Quello che cerco di fare in ogni fase del processo è essere emotivamente distaccato sbarazzandomi di intenzioni o modi di fare che potrebbero essere stati efficaci in passato, con l’intento di essere libero nella scoperta di nuove risposte e loro possibili domande.
