Parlaci un po’ di te, di come sei arrivato nel mondo del cinema.

Il cinema e le sue possibilità espressive hanno da sempre ispirato la mia creatività e sensibilità, ma ci è voluto “Il Cavaliere Oscuro” di Nolan, visto al cinema nel giorno del mio tredicesimo compleanno, per sconvolgermi al punto da farmi realizzare che questo doveva essere il mio futuro.

Tell us about yourself and how your passion for cinema was born.

Cinema and its expressive possibilities have always inspired my creativity and sensitivity, but it was Christopher Nolan’s “The Dark Knight” that shook me to the point of realizing that films had to be my future. I was only thirteen when I watched it at the cinema.

Un uomo deve affrontare per l’ennesima volta un personale ostacolo quotidiano nei confronti del mondo che lo circonda. Veniamo catapultati in uno spazio metafisico interiore, dove il tentativo lo spinge in una spirale di paranoia e insicurezza sempre più oscura. Ma quando tutto sembra perduto, libera la mente e ricorda: in fondo, è solo una telefonata.

Your short film Neurophonia, distributed by PREMIERE FILM, is now circulating in the festival circuits, start by telling us the synopsis:

A man has to face, yet again, a daily personal obstacle preventing him to reach the world around him. We’re thrown into an inner metaphysical space, where any attempt pushes him deep into an increasingly dark spiral of paranoia and self-doubt. But when everything seems lost, you need to clear your mind and remember: it’s just a phone call, after all.

Qual è l’inquadratura/frame che più rappresenta la tua opera? 

La si incontra più volte, e ognuna restituisce un pezzo in più dell’anima del protagonista.

What is the shot that represents your work?

You encounter this frame several times in the film, and everytime it gives a soul piece back to the protagonist.

Questa inquadratura (rispetto alla domanda precedente), indubbiamente la più rappresentativa, coincide anche con quella che ti è piaciuto di più mettere in scena? 

In realtà per quanto abbia amato progettarla è stata difficile da gestire, soprattutto per i VFX, la versione finale poi è frutto di lunghe sperimentazioni. C’è invece un’altra inquadratura a me cara che è stata quasi naturale da mettere in scena.

(In regards of the previous question) Does this shot, undoubtedly the most representative, also coincides with the shot you liked the most to stage?

Actually, as much as I loved designing it, it was a difficult scene to manage, especially because of the VFX. The final version of that shot is the result of extensive experimentation. There is another shot, one really dear to me, that was almost natural to stage.

Hai sempre le idee chiare quando componi l’inquadratura?

Tecnicismi a parte, l’atto di creazione mi arriva in genere come una visione istintiva, credo nel potere dell’inconscio e cerco di ascoltarlo quanto più. Da lì scavo per ‘mettere a fuoco’ ogni aspetto, e più scavo, più trovo! Talvolta mi stupisce come il risultato di un processo così rapido possa essere poi così denso ed esteso da mettere nero su bianco.

Do you always have clearly defined ideas when composing a frame?

Technicalities aside, the creative act generally comes to me as an instinct: I believe in the power of the unconscious and I try to listen to it as much as I can. From that point I dig to ‘focus’ on every aspect. The more I dig, the more I find! Sometimes it amazes me how the result of such a rapid process can be so dense and extensive that it can be put on paper

Qual è la prima immagine che ti viene in mente pensando al Cinema?

Per me la magia inizia proprio da queste sale buie popolate da persone che non conosci ma con cui condividi tacitamente un’esperienza. Sono un grande fruitore e promotore della sala cinematografica e condivido il pensiero di altri grandi registi che si sono espressi più volte a riguardo, come Nolan o Chazelle.

What is the first shot that comes to your mind when thinking about cinema?

For me, the real magic starts inside this dark rooms populated by people you don’t really know but with whom you’re about to share a common experience. I am a user and fervent promoter of the cinema and I share the opinion other great directors who have already expressed themselves about it, such as Nolan or Chazelle.
