Parlaci un po’ di te, di come sei arrivato nel mondo del cinema.
Mi chiamo Piernicola Arena e sono nato a Modena nel 1981. Ho sempre avuto uno spirito creativo: sin dalle scuole elementari disegnavo fumetti insieme ad un mio caro amico. Cresciuti, abbiamo iniziato ad appassionarci alla musica e a suonare, sempre insieme. Negli anni ‘90, quando frequentavo il primo superiore, presi in prestito la telecamera di un mio zio, fu amore a prima vista. Iniziai a filmare qualunque cosa e realizzai anche una serie “liberamente” ispirata a X-Files, scritta, diretta ed interpretata insieme agli amici di sempre. La passione durò qualche anno, poi mi dedicai ad altro. Tuttavia, il destino era in agguato: nei primi anni duemila iniziai a studiare, per puro caso e mosso da semplice curiosità personale, qualche programma di post-produzione video, successivamente questa mia curiosità è diventata la mia professione. Oggi sono un videomaker, e lo sono da ormai dieci anni. Mi occupo anche di regia, direzione della fotografia e post-produzione video, promozionali, didattici, musicali e di cortometraggi.
Tell us about you and how you started to make cinema
My name is Piernicola Arena, I was born in Modena in 1981. I always had a creative spirit: in primary school I was already drawing comics with a friend of mine. We grew up and we started to make music together. In the 90s, when I was in school, I borrowed a camera from my uncle, and I fell in love. I started filming and I realized a series freely inspired by “The X-Files”, written, directed and performed with my friends. This fascination lasted a few years, after that I took another road. Neverthless, my destiny was ready to ambush me: in the first years of 00s I started studying, out of curiosity, a few editing software, then my curiosity became my work. Today I’m a filmmaker as I have been for ten year. I deal with directing, DOP and post-production, promotional videos, school videos, musical videos and shortvideos.

Siamo nel luglio del 1969, il mondo si sta preparando ad assistere all’evento che segnerà indelebilmente un’epoca: il primo allunaggio. Matt e Laura affrontano una surreale odissea spaziale. Il sogno fanciullesco di un viaggio verso la Luna intervallato da una travolgente battaglia per aggiudicarsi più spazio… in camera da letto. Anche i due protagonisti vivranno a loro modo, ma comunque insieme, un evento senza precedenti, anche perché “da soli l’immensità sarebbe uno spreco”.
Today we will talk about the short movie “The Space Between Us”, directed by you, tell us about the synopsis:
It’s July 1969. The world is about to witness an event that will define an era: the launch of Apollo 11. Matt watches on with wonder from his living room. That night, he and his wife Laura embark on a surreal space odyssey that is mirrored by a passionate battle to win more space – in the bedroom. They’ll need to make it through the night and back to earth together. After all, ” – if we were alone, the immensity of space would really be a waste.”
Qual è l’inquadratura/frame che più rappresenta questa tua opera?
L’idea principale della storia è nata in realtà da un’immagine ben precisa: la visione zenitale del letto della coppia dei protagonisti. Da lassù si riesce a vedere la geografia della camera e la conseguente lotta per lo “spazio” nel letto, una battaglia vissuta (più o meno coscientemente) ogni notte da tante coppie in tutto il mondo e che è l’elemento comico portante del nostro corto. Non a caso, quella stessa scena è stata poi rappresentata ed esasperata nella locandina (anche se da una prospettiva diversa).
Which frame better represents your work?
The main idea of the story comes from a clear image: the zenital vision of the bed of the main characters. From up there we can see the geography of the room and the resulting fight for the “space” on the bed, a battle lived (more or less consciously) every single night between a lot of couples in the world and that is the comedic view of our short. That’s why this scene is shown in our movie’s poster (from another point of view).
Questa inquadratura, indubbiamente la più rappresentativa, coincide anche con quella che ti è piaciuto di più mettere in scena?
In realtà no, ma credo sia dovuto al fatto che il giorno in cui abbiamo messo in scena la camera da letto abbiamo avuto tanti problemi tecnici da gestire ed è stata forse la giornata di riprese più dura! Mi sono divertito molto di più in una scena ambientata nel corridoio, dove Guglielmo Favilla, che interpreta il protagonista Matt, ci ha fatti letteralmente morire dal ridere ad ogni take. Fortunatamente gli imprevisti e lo stress del set sono sempre stati stemperati dal buonumore, come si può anche vedere dalle varie clip di backstage pubblicate sulle nostre pagine social.
Does this frame, the most symbolic one, coincide with what you liked the most filming?
Not really, but I think it’s due to the fact that the day we filmed the bedroom scene we had so many technical issues to deal with and it was possibly the hardest day of shooting! I had a lot more fun in a scene set in the corridor, where Guglielmo Favilla, who plays the protagonist Matt, literally made us die laughing with every take. Fortunately, the unexpected events and the stress of the set have always been tempered by the good mood, as can also be seen from the various backstage clips published on our social pages.
Hai sempre le idee chiare quando componi l’inquadratura?
Non sempre. Sono molto istintivo, ma ci sono intere sequenze che ho ben chiare in mente. In genere seguo quel tipo di stimolo, istintivo, ma realizzo uno storyboard che mi aiuta a capire se quanto ho immaginato può funzionare, o se non sia il caso di tornare indietro e valutare altre opzioni. Lo storyboard mi aiuta (costringe) anche a dare contorni ben definiti a idee inizialmente vaghe o abbozzate, diventando un mio preziosissimo alleato durante le riprese (personalmente guardo più spesso lo storyboard che la shooting list).
Do you have a clear idea when you decide a frame?
Not always. I usually follow my instinct, but some sequences are really clear in my mind. Generally I follow that kind of stimulus, instictively, but then I realize a storyboard to help me understand if what I imagined can effectively work or if it is necessary to come back and evaluate new options. The storyboard helps me (forces me) to define limits to ideas that are sketchy and unclear, becoming my best fellow during my work (personally I check the storyboard much more than the shooting list).
Qual è la prima immagine che ti viene in mente pensando al Cinema?
Se penso a cosa mi abbia fatto maggiormente appassionare al cinema e sognare, specialmente da bambino, penso alla trilogia che più ho amato: Ritorno al Futuro. Al di là del film, quella è stata anche la prima volta in cui ho visto un breve filmato di backstage (non erano ancora così diffusi). L’immagine del treno che cade dal ponte nel terzo episodio, mi ricorda sempre l’emozione fanciullesca che ho provato nello scoprire come fosse stata realizzata la scena. Quella, ne sono sicuro, è stata l’origine di una sempre crescente curiosità che mi ha portato infine a fare questo mestiere.
What is the first shot that comes to your mind when you think about cinema?
If I think about what hooked me to cinema and dreaming, especially when I was young, I think about the trilogy I loved the most: Back to the future. Beyond the movie, that was the first time I saw the backstage clips (they were not so common then). The image of the train that falls from the bridge in the third episode reminds me the juvenile emotions i felt when I saw how that scene was made. That, I am sure of this, was the birth of the never ending curiosity which brought me to this job.
